Paul Weller teamed up with Irish newcomers The Strypes for a one-off performance at London's Rough Trade East last night (April 20th) as part of the shop's Record Store Day celebrations.
Headlining the shop's day of in-store gigs, which also saw performances from the likes of Frank Turner, King Midas Sound and a separate set from The Strypes themselves, Weller enlisted guitarist Josh McClorey and bass player Pete O'Hanlon as well as Miles Kane's drummer Jay Sharrock to join him for a thirty minute set.
It’s Record Store Day on Saturday; a kind of weird, but necessary I guess, annual event that’s become a critical point in release schedules. I’ve been going through the lists of releases at recordstoreday.com and thought it might be worth picking out a few things that are worth looking out for.
Increasingly, a fair amount of the day’s business is built on canny catalogue management aimed at collectors (especially vinyl fetishists), and there are a bunch of things here that fall roughly into that sector:
Paul Weller has announced plans to play a special show on Record Store Day at London's Rough Trade East.
Weller will take the stage at 8pm on Saturday, April 20 and play a 30 minute set, backed by Pete O’Hanlon and Josh McClorey from The Strypes on bass and guitar and Miles Kane's drummer Jay Sharrock.
Weller will also release a double a-side single of new material - Flame-Out! And The Olde Original - for Record Store Day.
Poet Michael Horovitz has teamed up with Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon and Paul Weller for a pair of Record Store day releases.
The quartet will appear on Horovitz' single, "Ballade Of The Nocturnal Commune" / "Extra Time Meltdown", which will be released by London-based vinyl-only jazz label, Gearbox Records.
Weller, Albarn and Coxon will also appear on Horovitz' album Bankbusted Nuclear Detergent Blues, the title track of which was commissioned by Weller, who printed the text in the artwork for his 2012 album Sonik Kicks.
The complete list of 125 records due for release on Record Store Day 2013 on April 20 has been revealed.
Among the highlights, David Bowie is releasing a 7” of “The Stars (Are Out Tonight”/”Where Are They Now” from his new album, The Next Day, alongside reissues of the 1973 single, “Drive In Saturday” and his “Bowie 1965!” EP.
As previously reported on Uncut Bob Dylan will release demos of “Wigwam”/”Thirsty Boots” from the Self Portrait sessions.
Bob Dylan has confirmed he will release a 7" single for Record Store Day 2013.
Last week, we reported rumours that Dylan was planning to release two tracks - "Wigwam" and "Thirsty Boots" - from the spring 1970 sessions for the Self Portrait album.
Dylan's record label, Columbia Records, have now confirmed the rumours are true, and the 7" single will be on sale in selected independent record shops for Record Store Day on April 20.
Elvis Costello is reportedly to release a new album for Record Store Day 2013.
The album, as yet untitled, will be a collaboration between Costello and The Roots. According to an interview on NYU Local with Roots’ drummer Questlove, the collaboration grew out of Costello’s appearances on American chat show Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, where The Roots are the house band.
Bob Dylan is reportedly releasing a 7” single as part of Record Store Day 2013, according to an online round up of this year’s planned releases.
The 7” will comprise versions of “Wigwam” b/w “Thirsty Boots”, which may be taken from the forthcoming Bootleg Series Volume 10.
Jack White has been named the official ambassador for Record Store Day 2013.
The former frontman of The White Stripes has been named as the figurehead of the celebration of independent record shops thanks to the fact that he not only makes records, but also owns a record store and a record label: his Nashville based Third Man Records.
