This Must Be The Place

Paolo Sorrentino’s This Must Be The Place muses on the existence of a fictional rock star. This is Cheyenne, who’s spent 20 years out of the spotlight, living in a mansion outside Dublin. Played by Sean Penn and modeled physically on Robert Smith – the crows’ nest of black hair, lipstick, eyeliner, fondness for black – Cheyenne spends his days watching Jamie Oliver programmes on television, debating whether or not to sell his shares in Tesco and pondering, “Why is Lady Gaga?” Fully Gothed up, he goes shopping in a nearby mall to buy pizza.

Graham Coxon: The Great Escapee

Graham Coxon’s new album A+E is reviewed in the latest Uncut (May 2012, Take 180), out now – so we thought we’d revisit the last time the guitarist featured in our pages. In 2009, John Robinson met the guitarist at his Camden home to find out about his folk-infused solo album The Spinning Top, and hear all about the little matter of his old band’s reunion… Picture: Essy Syad

Ronnie Wood says Rolling Stones will start recording new material this month

The Rolling Stones' Ronnie Wood has revealed that the band will start recording new material this month. Speaking to the Daily Mirror, the guitarist said he and his bandmates would be hitting the studio to "throw some ideas around" in preparation for their 50th anniversary celebrations. Wood, who said the band were eager "to get the feel again", added: It's like working out for the Olympics or something. You've got to go into training. So we're going to go into training.

Reservoir Dogs At 20

I had lunch with Harvey Weinstein once. This was during the Cannes Film Festival, and I was among a group of film journalists invited to one of the swelegant hotels on the Croisette to nibble canapés and listen dutifully while Weinstein unveiled the forthcoming slate for his company, Miramax.

The Gaslight Anthem: Baby He Was Born To Run

As this month’s new Uncut (May 2012, Take 180) features Brian Fallon talking about The Gaslight Anthem’s upcoming new album, Handwritten, we thought it would be fitting to dig out this Uncut feature from January 2010 – in which Fallon tells Jaan Uhelszki how he became a rumbustious, show-stealing international phenomenon, beloved even by The Boss himself. Not bad for a tattooed punk kid whose “mother fed me Born To Run with my Cheerios”…

Big Star: What’s Going Ahn

Alex Chilton’s wild, idiosyncratic life after Big Star is examined in the new issue of Uncut (Take 180, May 2012), out now. But what happened before the demise of Chilton’s greatest group? They should have been rock superstars, but Rob Jovanovic explains how drugs, in-fighting and personal tragedy meant Big Star had to settle for being the biggest cult band of all time (from Uncut's Take 94, March 2005). ________________________________

Paul McCartney joined onstage by Paul Weller, Ronnie Wood and Roger Daltrey

Paul McCartney was joined onstage by Paul Weller, The Rolling Stones' guitarist Ronnie Wood and The Who singer Roger Daltrey during his set at London's Royal Albert Hall last night (March 29).

Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s “Americana”: first listen

It begins as you might imagine, with a guitarist who seems about to play a sputtering solo rather than start a song, a drummer trying to work out what time to keep and, gradually, a band lunging towards a tune: “Oh Susannah”.
