ELVIS PERKINS
This LA native – the son of the late actor, Anthony “Norman Bates” Perkins – may tap the same talent pools as many other contemporary troubadours (Dylan, Tom Waits, Loudon Wainwright III), but his voice rather suggests that of a 1930s blues crooner whose soul is scarred by terrible loss.
Perkins’ debut LP is informed by both the death of his father from an AIDS-related illness and that of his mother nine year later in the 9/11 disaster, but despite its bleakness, “Ash Wednesday” is both rich in atmosphere and somehow oddly romantic. Latitude’s Uncut Arena on Saturday is a terrific chance to see what he’s made of, live.
Latitude takes place July 12 – 15 at Henham Park, Southwold, Suffolk.
