It was probably asking too much for this two-disc set of Webb interpretations to be comprehensive (plenty of Glen Campbell but not โ€œWichita Linemanโ€, no Isaac Hayes or Donna Summer). Nevertheless,โ€ฆTunesmith is a much-needed collection of his emotionally ripe songs. Alongside familiar gems by 5th Dimension and Richard Harris, there are some rare treasures: Webbโ€™s first lead vocal, fronting Strawberry Children on the ornate pop of โ€œLove Years Comingโ€; a tempestuous, bluesy take on โ€œRequiem: 820 Lathamโ€ by Australian footnotes The Executives; original Fairports singer Ian Matthews making dappled folk-rock out of โ€œMet Her On A Planeโ€; the post-Ross Supremesโ€™ marvellous โ€œ5.30 Planeโ€.

Some of the โ€™70s balladry on the second disc is predictably over egged, and only the truly resilient will want to hear Kenny Logginsโ€™ โ€œThe Last Unicornโ€. Still, one to file alongside Archive, WEAโ€™s terrific compilation of Webbโ€™s own performances.
